Lupus is one of the autoimmune diseases. It is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect parts of the body such as the skin and joints. It shares symptoms that are common with other autoimmune diseases.

If a person is found to have an autoimmune disease , the immune system mistakenly attacks itself and targets the tissues, cells and organs of the person’s own body.

Systemic lupus can affect any organ or multiple organ system in the body. Discord lupus is always limited to the skin. It is identified by a rash that may appear on the face, neck and scalp.

Symptoms of systemic and discord lupus, one of the autoimmune diseases, will range from achy joints, arthritis (swollen joints), skin rashes, anemia, sun or light sensitivity (photosensitivity) to mouth ulcers and seizures.

When symptoms appear, it's called a "flare." These signs may come and go. You may have swelling and rashes one week and no symptoms at all the next. You may find that your symptoms flare after you've been out in the sun or after a hard day at work. Even if you take medicine for lupus, you may find that there are times when the symptoms become worse. Learning to recognize that a flare is coming can help you take steps to cope with it. Many people feel very tired or have pain, a rash, a fever, stomach discomfort, headache, or dizziness just before a flare

The causes of autoimmune diseases are not known. It is known that some autoimmune diseases seem to run in families. However, the diseases may show up as different illnesses in different family members. For example, a grandmother may have lupus, her daughter diabetes, and her mother rheumatoid arthritis

A doctor can diagnose autoimmune diseases asking a patient about her symptoms and in addition by looking at laboratory tests. Autoimmune diseases are difficult to diagnose, especially in the early stages. In some cases, a diagnosis cannot be made and the patient must continue with many visits to the doctor.
