Scleroderma Autoimmune DiseaseDiscover What Nearly One Million Sufferers Have in Common With YOU!
Scleroderma
is one of the
autoimmune
diseases.
It is characterized by the formation of scar tissue in the skin and organs
of the body. Scleroderma shares symptoms that are common with other
autoimmune diseases. If
a person is found to have an autoimmune disease ,
the immune system mistakenly attacks itself and targets the tissues, cells
and organs of the person’s own body. There
are two major types of this autoimmune disease. They
are called localized and systemic. Localized
type
affects only the skin of the sufferer, whereas the systemic type of
scleroderma is more serious and debilitating. It is a multi-system disease
that affects internal organ systems, including the skin. Localized
scleroderma has three main subtypes, which are called morphea, generalized
morphea and linear scleroderma.
Systemic
type
is the more serious type because it affects internal organ systems. It’s
three subtypes are called limited, diffuse and sine. One of the main concerns that sufferers
of this autoimmune disease is how it will will affect their
appearance. For most people thick and hardened skin, particularly on the
face, can be extremely hard to accept. Hard connective tissue on the hands
can make simple tasks difficult to do. These can range from brushing your
teeth, unbuttoning a coat, to using a knife and fork. The culmination of
all these effects can affect one’s confidence and very badly. The
causes of autoimmune diseases are not known. It is known that some
autoimmune diseases seem to run in families. However, the diseases may
show up as different illnesses in different family members. For example, a
grandmother may have lupus, her daughter diabetes, and her mother
rheumatoid arthritis A doctor can diagnose
autoimmune diseases asking a patient about her symptoms and in addition by
looking at laboratory tests. Autoimmune diseases are difficult to
diagnose, especially in the early stages. In some cases, a diagnosis
cannot be made and the patient must continue with many visits to the
doctor.
